CHAPTER NINETEEN

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Trump wants to pull out of NAFTA

Some of Trump’s advisers think he acts on impulse.

One faction supports the free trade, others don’t.

As Trump prepared for his 100th day in office, he announced in a meeting that he wanted an executive order that indicated the US was pulling out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

In attendance were Kushner, Porter, Pence, Navarro and Ross. Others kept silent as Porter argued on the impossibility.

He blamed it on time factor. There had to be a deal and a 180 day-notice prior to the termination. He also said it couldn't be an executive order because the Congress had to discuss it and that would even take longer than 180 days.

More so, key economic leaders in the cabinet, Cohn and Mnuchin, were not present at the meeting. Their opinions needed to be heard.

Trump would have none of it. He wanted to have the executive order on his desk by the Friday of the same week.

Porter sought help. He called to McMaster who wasn't really involved since the beginning. Both agreed that it would threaten national security. They called for a meeting of the key components of Trump's administration. Navarro was adamant but others, including John Kelly, the secretary for Homeland Security, said that the US would lose greatly if they pulled out.

It would affect their financial market and other dealers around the world may stop trade with them because they would think they were the next victims.

After the meeting, Porter met Sonny Perdue who had just been appointed Secretary of Agriculture. He wanted him to speak to the President on the negative impact of a withdrawal.

Sonny Perdue, Porter and Wilbur Ross talked with the President in the oval office. Perdue said the US gained a huge interest from exports worth 39 billion dollars annually to Canada and Mexico.

A withdrawal was a catastrophe for major areas that had voted for Trump during the elections. This meant that Trump would be shooting himself in the foot. And hindering a chance of future support from such areas.

Trump mellowed and agreed to stall the withdrawal although they would make public threats about actually doing so.

Porter thought it was over for a while until he got a call to meet the President. Navarro had an ad-hoc meeting with the President and had complained that nothing much had been done on trade, except the withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), because Porter was practicing red-tapism. He was deliberately delaying the job and preventing the President from signing documents.

Trump would have none of it. He even instructed that he wanted to see and sign the 180 days termination notice document because he wanted to do it.

Porter sought Cohn and reported it. Cohn asked him to relax. He would remove the document from Trump's table. The man only remembered things on his desk or the ones brought to his notice. Other than that, they had a good chance of stopping him from withdrawing from NAFTA.

The trade deficit issue was up again.
